NUST CGPA Calculator

Official GPA Tool & Guide for National University of Sciences & Technology

Updated for Fall 2025 Grading Policy | 👨‍🎓 Reviewed by NUST Alumni Network

Welcome to the NUST CGPA Calculator, designed specifically for students of the National University of Sciences & Technology (NUST). Whether you are studying Engineering, Social Sciences, or Business at NUST, keeping track of your academic performance is crucial. This tool uses the official NUST grading policy to help you calculate your Semester GPA (SGPA) and Cumulative GPA (CGPA) accurately.

NUST follows a relative grading system on a 4.00 scale. Understanding this scale is key to maintaining your scholarship eligibility and meeting degree requirements.

Current Scale: NUST (4.0)
Cumulative GPA 0.00
Total Credits: 0 | Total Points: 0
Est. Percentage: 0.00% (HEC Formula)

How to Use the NUST GPA Calculator

1. Enter Course Details

Input your subject name (e.g., "Calculus") and credit hours. Most NUST courses are 3 or 4 credits (check your course outline).

2. Select Letter Grade

Choose the grade assigned by your instructor based on the relative grading curve (e.g., A, B+, B). The calculator automatically assigns the correct 4.0 scale points.

3. Calculate & Export

Your SGPA and CGPA update instantly. Click "Add Semester" for cumulative results and "Export to PDF" for a printable record.

Understanding NUST's Relative Grading (The Bell Curve)

NUST uses a Relative Grading System based on the normal distribution (Bell Curve) of class marks. Unlike absolute grading (where 80% is always an 'A'), your grade depends on the Class Mean (Average) and Standard Deviation (σ).

What does this mean for you?

  • If the exam was difficult and the class average is low (e.g., 50/100), a score of 65 might secure an 'A'.
  • If the exam was easy and the average is high (e.g., 85/100), a score of 80 might only get a 'B'.
  • Instructor Discretion: The final distribution is determined by the course instructor and approved by the Department Board of Studies (DBS).

NUST CGPA to Percentage Formula

⚠️ Important Disclaimer: NUST transcript does not mention percentage, and there is no official conversion formula provided by the university.

However, for job applications or scholarships (like HEC) requiring percentage, the standard HEC formula is widely accepted as an estimation:

Percentage = (CGPA / 4.00) × 100

Example: If your CGPA is 3.50, your estimated percentage is (3.5 / 4.0) × 100 = 87.5%.

NUST Academic Honors & Awards

Award / Status Min CGPA Required Additional Criteria
President's Gold Medal Best in University Highest CGPA in the entire batch + Project.
Rector's Gold Medal 3.50 - 4.00 Best Final Year Project (FYP).
Chancellor's Silver Medal Second Highest Second highest CGPA in the department.
Dean's Honor List 3.50 per Semester Must take full course load & no 'F' grades.
Probation (Warning) < 2.00 (UG) / < 2.50 (PG) Risk of relegation or dismissal if repeated.

NUST Grading Scale (Official)

The following table represents the standard grading points used at NUST. Actual letter grades are determined by relative grading.

Letter Grade Grade Points Remarks
A 4.0 Outstanding
B+ 3.5 Very Good
B 3.0 Good
C+ 2.5 Average
C 2.0 Satisfactory
D+ 1.5 Pass (UG Only)
D 1.0 Pass (UG Only)
F 0.0 Fail

Calculation Example

Here is how a typical NUST student's GPA is calculated for one semester:

  • Calculus (3 Credits): Grade A (4.0) → 3 × 4.0 = 12.0 points
  • Physics (3 Credits): Grade B+ (3.5) → 3 × 3.5 = 10.5 points
  • Programming (4 Credits): Grade B (3.0) → 4 × 3.0 = 12.0 points
  • Islamic Studies (2 Credits): Grade A (4.0) → 2 × 4.0 = 8.0 points

Total Credits: 12

Total Points: 42.5

SGPA = 42.5 / 12 = 3.54

NUST Grading System & Policies

NUST follows a Relative Grading System, meaning your grade depends on your performance compared to the class average (Bell Curve), not just your absolute marks.

Passing & Probation

  • Passing GPA: 2.00 (Undergraduate), 3.00 (Masters/PhD).
  • Probation: If your CGPA falls below 2.0 (UG) or 3.0 (PG), you are placed on probation.
  • Dismissal: Consecutive probations can lead to academic dismissal.

Attendance & Failure

75% Rule: Minimum 75% attendance is mandatory to sit in finals.

'F' Grade: 0.0 Points. Must repeat the course.

Repeats: Repeating a course replaces the old GPA contribution, but the old grade remains on the transcript.

Frequently Asked Questions (NUST)

Relative Grading & GPA

How does relative grading work at NUST?

In relative grading, the class average marks are typically set to a 'B' or 'B+' grade. Your grade depends on how far your marks are from the average (Standard Deviation). Scored 80% but class average is 85%? You might get a B. Scored 60% but average is 40%? You might get an A.

How is SGPA calculated?

SGPA = Σ (Course Credits × Grade Points) / Total Credits. For example, if you took a 3-credit course and got an A (4.0), you earned 12 points. Sum these points for all subjects and divide by total credit hours.

What is a good CGPA at NUST?

A CGPA of 3.50+ is excellent and often required for the Rector's Gold Medal. 3.00+ is considered good for most jobs and masters admissions. Below 2.00 puts you on probation.

Failing, Probation & Attendance

What marks are required to pass a course?

For UG students, the minimum passing grade is D (1.0), which typically corresponds to the lowest end of the passing curve (often around 50 absolute marks, but varies). For PG students, minimum passing grade is C (2.0).

What happens if attendance is below 75%?

If your attendance falls below 75% in a subject, you are awarded an 'F' grade (often noted as F-Attendance) and barred from the final exam. You must repeat the entire course (attend classes again).

Can I repeat a course to improve GPA?

Yes, if you have a grade of C or below (rules may vary by department), you can repeat the course. The better grade counts towards your CGPA, but the old grade remains visible on your transcript.

General Questions

How to convert NUST CGPA to percentage?

NUST does not officially provide a conversion formula because it uses relative grading. However, for external applications, common estimations (like linear interpolation) or HEC formulas are often used. Always ask the Controller of Examinations for an official conversion letter if needed.

A 2.99 remains 2.99 and is not rounded up to 3.00 for honor rolls or graduation requirements.

What does 'W' or 'I' grade mean?

'W' (Withdrawn): Indicates you dropped the course before the deadline. It has no impact on your GPA.
'I' (Incomplete): Temporary grade if you missed requirements due to valid reasons. Must be completed within the specified time or it becomes an 'F'.

How do I get on the Dean's Honor List?

To qualify for the Dean's Honor List, you typically need an SGPA of 3.50 or higher in a regular semester, with a full course load and no 'F' grades.
