AKTU (Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University), formerly UPTU, is Uttar Pradesh's largest technical university with over 700 affiliated engineering and management colleges. It uses a 10-point CBCS grading scale and the unique percentage formula % = (CGPA × 10) − 7.5 — different from most other Indian universities. This calculator computes your SGPA, CGPA, estimated percentage, Division, and B.Tech Honours eligibility (CGPA ≥ 7.50, no carryovers).

AKTU Grading Scale (CBCS 10-Point)
AKTU uses an absolute grading system. Marks in Internal Assessment and End Semester Exam are combined and mapped to grade points. Formula: SGPA = Σ(Grade Points × Credits) / ΣCredits. Percentage = (CGPA × 10) − 7.5.
| Grade | Points | Mark Range (%) | Status | Honours Eligible? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| O | 10 | 91 – 100% | Outstanding | ✓ Yes |
| A+ | 9 | 81 – 90% | Excellent | ✓ Yes |
| A | 8 | 71 – 80% | Very Good | ✓ Yes (if avg ≥7.5) |
| B+ | 7 | 61 – 70% | Good | Depends on CGPA |
| B | 6 | 51 – 60% | Above Average | ✗ No |
| C | 5 | 45 – 50% | Average | ✗ No |
| D / P | 4 | 40 – 44% | Pass (Min) | ✗ No |
| F | 0 | Below 40% (Ext <30%) | Fail (Carryover) | ✗ Disqualified |
⚠️ You must score 30% minimum in the External exam AND 40% aggregate to pass theory. Practicals require 50% minimum. PWG (Pass with Grace) status disqualifies you from Honours.
Step-by-Step SGPA Calculation (AKTU B.Tech Example)
Here is how a B.Tech CSE Semester 3 student at AKTU calculates SGPA and checks Honours eligibility:
| Subject | Credits (C) | Grade | Points (GP) | C × GP |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Data Structures & Algorithms | 4 | A+ | 9 | 36 |
| Discrete Mathematics | 4 | O | 10 | 40 |
| Digital Electronics | 4 | A | 8 | 32 |
| Object Oriented Programming | 4 | B+ | 7 | 28 |
| Engineering Economics | 2 | A | 8 | 16 |
| DSA Lab | 2 | O | 10 | 20 |
| Total | 20 | — | — | 172 |
SGPA 8.60 puts this student firmly in Honours-eligible territory (≥7.50 CGPA required). They must maintain this across all 8 semesters with no carryovers. Track yours using the calculator above.
5 Common AKTU CGPA Calculation Mistakes
Using CGPA × 10 Instead of (CGPA × 10) − 7.5
AKTU's percentage formula is unique. A CGPA of 8.0 gives 72.5% (not 80%). Using the wrong formula is the most common mistake, especially when applying for government jobs that ask for percentage.
Assuming PWG Does Not Affect Honours
PWG (Pass with Grace) status counts as not cleared in first attempt. Even one PWG subject disqualifies you from B.Tech Honours, regardless of your final CGPA.
Not Counting Carryover Credits
F-grade subjects contribute 0 points but their credits ARE counted in the denominator. Students who skip failed subjects when estimating CGPA end up with inflated results.
Missing the External Exam 30% Threshold
Even with perfect internal marks, you FAIL if you score below 30% in the External exam. This is a separate pass criterion from the 40% aggregate. Many students overlook this.
AKTU CGPA vs Percentage vs US GPA vs German Grade
Use this table to cross-reference your AKTU CGPA with international systems when applying abroad:
| AKTU CGPA | % (C×10−7.5) | US GPA (WES) | German Grade | Division/Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 9.5 – 10.0 | 87.5 – 92.5% | 4.0 | 1.0 | Honours |
| 9.0 – 9.4 | 82.5 – 86.5% | 3.9 | 1.2 | Honours |
| 8.0 – 8.9 | 72.5 – 81.5% | 3.5 | 1.8 | Honours |
| 7.5 – 7.9 | 67.5 – 71.5% | 3.3 | 2.1 | Honours (min) |
| 6.75 – 7.4 | 60 – 66.5% | 2.8 | 2.5 | First Division |
| 5.75 – 6.74 | 50 – 59.9% | 2.2 | 3.1 | Second Division |
| 4.0 – 5.74 | 32.5 – 49.9% | 1.5 | 4.0 | Pass |
German grade uses Bavarian Formula with Nmin=4.0 (AKTU passing). US GPA uses WES band mapping. See: Indian CGPA to US GPA | German Grade Calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions (AKTU)
Percentage & Conversion
What is the official formula for AKTU Percentage?
AKTU uses a specific formula: Percentage = (CGPA × 10) -
7.5.
Example: If your CGPA is 8.0, then Percentage = (8.0 × 10) - 7.5 =
72.5%. This applies to B.Tech, MBA, and MCA courses.
What is the minimum CGPA for First Division?
First Division is awarded for 60% marks and above. Using the formula, this corresponds to a CGPA of 6.75 or higher. Second Division is 50% (CGPA ≥ 5.75).
Honours & Results
How to get B.Tech with Honours in AKTU?
To be eligible for B.Tech Honours, you must:
1. Secure a CGPA ≥ 7.50.
2. Clear all subjects in the first attempt (no carryovers or
backlogs).
3. Often, complete additional MOOCs/credits as per the latest ordinance.
How does Challenge Evaluation work?
If you are unsatisfied with your result, you can apply for Challenge Evaluation (Stage 2). Copies are re-checked by two subject experts. If the average of their marks varies by >15% from original, your marks are updated. It costs around ₹2500 per subject.
Passing & Grace Marks
How many Grace Marks are allowed (PWG)?
AKTU allows up to 10 grace marks per academic year to help pass a theory subject. If awarded, your result status shows PWG (Pass With Grace). These marks do not add to the total but help you clear the subject.
What is the minimum passing criteria?
For B.Tech theory:
• External Exam: Min 30% required.
• Total (Int + Ext): Min 40% required.
For Practicals/Projects: Min 50% required.
What is PCP in AKTU result?
PCP stands for Pass Criteria Pending. It usually means you have failed in one or more subjects and need to clear them (Carry Over Paper) to complete the year/course.
General

Placements & Study Abroad
What is a good CGPA at AKTU for placements?
Most IT companies visiting AKTU-affiliated colleges (TCS, Infosys, Wipro, HCL) set a minimum cutoff of CGPA 6.0 (First Division, ~52.5%). Tier-1 companies and product firms like Juspay, Samsung R&D, and Nagarro typically require 7.0+ CGPA (~62.5%). For Honours and top placements, aim for 7.5+ CGPA. For US MS programs, a CGPA of 7.5+ (~3.3 WES GPA) is competitive.
How does AKTU CGPA convert to German grade?
Use the Bavarian Formula with Nmax = 10.0 and Nmin = 4.0 (AKTU passing grade D/P = 4 pts). Example: CGPA 8.0 → German Grade = 1 + 3 × [(10−8)/(10−4)] = 2.0 (Gut/Good). CGPA 7.5 gives 2.25. Use our German Grade Calculator for instant results.
Why is AKTU percentage lower than other universities for the same CGPA?
AKTU uses the formula % = (CGPA × 10) − 7.5, which deducts 7.5 percentage points from the simple CGPA × 10 calculation. This is because AKTU calibrates its grade bands differently — passing starts at 40% aggregate but the Grade D (4 pts) range covers 40–44%, leading to a non-linear mapping. For government job applications (SSC, UPSC, PSUs) requiring ≥60%, you need a CGPA of at least 6.75 at AKTU.
