VTU Grading System (CBCS 10-Point)

VTU uses an absolute grading system under CBCS. Marks secured in CIE (Continuous Internal Evaluation) and SEE (Semester End Exam) are combined and converted to letter grades. Formula: SGPA = Σ(Grade Points × Credits) / ΣCredits.

GradePointsMark Range (%)LevelCIE+SEE Pass?
O / S1090 – 100%Outstanding
A+980 – 89%Excellent
A870 – 79%Very Good
B+760 – 69%Good
B655 – 59%Above Average
C550 – 54%Average
P / D440 – 49% (Agg)Pass (35% in SEE)
F0Below passingFail (Backlog)

⚠️ You must score 35% minimum in SEE and 40% aggregate (CIE + SEE) to pass a theory subject. Failing CIE alone may still result in an F grade even with high SEE marks.

Step-by-Step SGPA Calculation (VTU 2021 Scheme Example)

Here is how a BE CSE Semester 5 student (2021 Scheme) calculates SGPA under the VTU CBCS system:

SubjectCredits (C)GradePoints (GP)C × GP
Design & Analysis of Algorithms3A+927
Database Management Systems3O1030
Computer Networks3A824
Formal Languages & Automata3B+721
Microcontrollers & Embedded Systems3A824
DBMS Lab1O1010
CN Lab1A+99
Total17145
SGPA = 145 ÷ 17 = 8.53  |  % (2021) = 8.53 × 10 = 85.3%  |  % (2018) = (8.53 − 0.75) × 10 = 77.8%

This student earns SGPA 8.53 — well above the FCD threshold (≥7.0 for 2021 Scheme). Enter your grades in the calculator above to track your 8-semester CGPA and check FCD eligibility instantly.

5 Common VTU CGPA Calculation Mistakes

Using Wrong % Formula

2021/22 Scheme uses CGPA × 10. 2018/15 Scheme uses (CGPA − 0.75) × 10. A CGPA of 8.5 gives 85% (new) but only 77.5% (old). Check your admission year — this is the most common mistake VTU students make.

Assuming FCD with Backlogs

FCD (First Class with Distinction) requires passing ALL subjects in the first attempt only. Even one backlog cleared in a subsequent attempt makes you ineligible for FCD, regardless of your final CGPA.

Not Tracking CIE Separately

CIE (internal marks) and SEE (exam) must each be passed independently. You need 35% in SEE AND 40% aggregate. Students who skip CIE tests often fail even with decent SEE marks.

Ignoring Activity Points

Apart from CGPA, VTU mandates 100 Activity Points (per AICTE/NAAC guidelines) to be eligible for the final degree. These are earned through sports, cultural activities, NSS/NCC, technical events, and online courses.

VTU Grading Schemes (2018 vs 2021/22)

Passing Criteria (2022)

  • Theory (SEE): Min 35% (e.g., 35/100 or 18/50).
  • Aggregate: CIE + SEE must be ≥ 40%.
  • Practical: Min 40% in exams.

Percentage Conversion

2021/2022 Scheme: Percentage = CGPA × 10

2015/2018 Scheme: Percentage = (CGPA - 0.75) × 10

VTU Academic Rules (FCD & Year Back)

🌟 First Class with Distinction (FCD)

2021/22 Scheme: Typically CGPA ≥ 7.0 (70%).

2018 Scheme: Typically CGPA ≥ 7.75.

*Must pass all subjects in First Attempt.

📅 Year Back System

If you fail in more than 4 subjects in a specific academic year (Odd + Even sem combined), you may not be allowed to enter the next year (Vertical Progression rule).

📊 Activity Points

Apart from CGPA, you must earn 100 Activity Points (AICTE rule) through extracurriculars to be eligible for the degree.

Frequently Asked Questions (VTU)

Calculation & Formulas (2021 vs 2018)

What is the formula to convert VTU CGPA to Percentage?

It strictly depends on your scheme:
2021 & 2022 Scheme: Formula is simple: CGPA × 10 (e.g., 8.2 CGPA = 82%).
2015 & 2018 Scheme: Formula is (CGPA - 0.75) × 10 (e.g., 8.2 CGPA = 74.5%).
Check your grade sheet or regulation book to confirm.

What is SGPA vs CGPA in VTU?

SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) is calculated for a single semester based on credits and grades. CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the weighted average of all semesters completed so far.

Distinction & Class Ranks

What is the CGPA required for First Class with Distinction (FCD)?

For the 2021 Scheme, FCD is usually awarded for CGPA ≥ 7.0 (70%). For the 2018 Scheme, it is CGPA ≥ 7.75. Crucially, you must clear all subjects in the first attempt within the course duration.

Can I get Distinction if I cleared an arrear?

Generally, no. First Class with Distinction is reserved for students who pass all subjects in their first attempt. However, you can still secure "First Class" if your CGPA meets the cutoff (e.g., ≥ 6.0/6.75) even with history of arrears.

Passing & Year Back System

What is the 'Year Back' rule in VTU?

The vertical progression rule states that to move to the next odd semester (e.g., 3rd to 5th), you must not have more than 4 backlogs from the previous two semesters combined. If you have >4 arrears, you face a 'Year Back' and cannot attend classes until you clear them.

What are the passing marks for 2021/22 Scheme?

You typically need 35% in SEE (Semester End Exam) and an aggregate (CIE + SEE) of 40% to pass a theory course. For practicals, the minimum is often higher (e.g., 40% in exams).

How does 'X' grade (Absent) affect CGPA?

An 'X' grade is treated as Absent/Provisional Fail. It carries 0 grade points, which drastically reduces your SGPA for that semester. You must re-register or appear for the exam to clear it.

General & Accuracy

Does this calculator support the 2022 Scheme?

Yes, the grade points (O=10, A+=9, etc.) are standard across CBCS schemes. The main difference is the percentage conversion, which is displayed as CGPA × 10 for the new scheme.

Placements & Study Abroad

What is a good CGPA at VTU for placements?

Most IT companies visiting VTU-affiliated colleges require a minimum CGPA of 6.0 (First Class, 60% in 2021 Scheme). Tier-1 companies like Infosys, Wipro, TCS, and Accenture typically set 6.5+ CGPA cutoffs. For product companies (Amazon, Google, Microsoft) through campus drives, 7.5+ CGPA is competitive. For US MS programs, aim for 7.0+ CGPA (70%, ~3.0 WES GPA).

How does VTU CGPA convert to German grade?

Use the Bavarian Formula with Nmax = 10.0 and Nmin = 4.0 (VTU minimum passing CGPA). Example: VTU CGPA 8.5 → German Grade = 1 + 3 × [(10−8.5)/(10−4)] = 1.75 (Gut/Good). A CGPA of 8.5 puts you in a strong position for TU9 universities in Germany. Use our German Grade Calculator for instant results.

How do I improve my VTU CGPA in the final semesters?

Since VTU CGPA is cumulative and credit-weighted, early semesters (1–4) have a larger long-term impact. In final semesters: (1) Focus on high-credit subjects (3 credits) over low-credit labs (1 credit) for maximum impact. (2) Clear all pending backlogs — each F replaced by O lifts CGPA significantly. (3) Score well in the project (usually 4–6 credits in Sem 7/8) — it is easier to score high and has high credit weight. (4) Ensure you have 100 Activity Points logged before the final exam registration.
