Punjab University CGPA Calculator

Official Tool for University of the Punjab (PU)

Updated for Semester Rules 2023+ | ⚠️ For Semester System Only

Welcome to the Punjab University (PU) CGPA Calculator. As the oldest university in Pakistan, PU has rigorous academic standards. This tool is designed to help students from all faculties (Science, Arts, Commerce, Law) accurately calculate their Semester GPA and Cumulative GPA.

The calculator uses the official 4.0 grading scale as per the University of the Punjab semester regulations, supporting the standard grade distribution (A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, etc.).

How to Calculate PU CGPA

1. Semester System Only

This calculator is for BS, MS, and MPhil programs under the Semester System. Annual system results (BA/BSc) use marks/divisions, not CGPA.

2. Enter Grades

Select your letter grade (e.g., A, B+) for each subject. If you only know obtained marks, use the table below to find the corresponding letter grade.

3. Credit Hours

Input the credit hours as listed on your roll number slip or transcript. Most theory courses are 3 or 4 credits.

Current Scale: Punjab University
Cumulative GPA 0.00
Total Credits: 0 | Total Points: 0
Est. Percentage: 0.00% (HEC Formula)

PU Grading Scale

Verify your grades against the standard Punjab University grading chart:

Letter Grade Marks % Grade Points
A 85% + 4.00
A- 80 - 84% 3.70
B+ 75 - 79% 3.30
B 70 - 74% 3.00
B- 65 - 69% 2.70
C+ 61 - 64% 2.30
C 58 - 60% 2.00
C- 55 - 57% 1.70
D 50 - 54% 1.00
F Below 50% 0.00

Calculation Example

Example of GPA calculation for a Social Sciences student:

  • English (3 Credits): Grade B+ (3.30) → 3 × 3.30 = 9.90 points
  • Sociology (3 Credits): Grade A- (3.70) → 3 × 3.70 = 11.10 points
  • Statistics (4 Credits): Grade A (4.00) → 4 × 4.00 = 16.00 points

Total Credits: 10

Total Points: 37.0

SGPA = 37.0 / 10 = 3.70

Frequently Asked Questions (PU)

Calculation & Conversion

How do I convert PU CGPA to Percentage?

Punjab University does not have a single standard formula for all departments, but Multiplying CGPA by 9.5 is a common practice for external equivalency. Always check your specific Detailed Mark Certificate (DMC) for the official rule applicable to your session.

What is the formula for GPA?

GPA = Σ (Credit Hours × Grade Points) / Total Credit Hours. You essentially calculate the weighted average of your grade points.

Passing, Probation & Degree

What is the minimum passing grade?

You need at least 50% marks to pass a subject, which corresponds to a 'D' grade (1.00 GP). Anything below 50% is an 'F' grade (0.00 GP). However, to get your degree, your overall CGPA must be at least 2.00.

What are the "Drop" rules?

First Semester: If your GPA is below 1.50, you are dropped from the rolls.
Subsequent Semesters: If CGPA is below 1.70, you are dropped. Probation occurs between these thresholds and 2.00.

How does the Annual System grading work?

The Annual System (BA/BSc/MA) uses Marks and Divisions (1st, 2nd, 3rd), not CGPA. To convert Annual marks to GPA for equivalence, you must contact the PU Examinations Department for an official certificate.

General Questions

Is attendance compulsory?

Yes, 75% attendance is mandatory to sit in the final examination of a course.

Can I repeat a course?

You can repeat a course if you obtained an 'F' grade or a 'D' grade (to improve your CGPA). The improved grade will be used for calculation, but the previous attempt may still appear on the transcript.
