NUML CGPA Calculator

Official Tool for National University of Modern Languages

The NUML CGPA Calculator is designed to help students from all NUML campuses (Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar, Multan, Hyderabad, Quetta, Faisalabad, Rawalpindi) calculate their GPA.

NUML uses an absolute grading system. This calculator uses the standard grade points (A=4.0, B+=3.5, etc.) to give you an accurate estimation of your coursework performance.

Key NUML Terminology

Academic Terms

  • Deficient Student: A student with SGPA/CGPA below 2.00 or failed courses.
  • Relegation: Being demoted to a junior batch due to poor performance.
  • Improvement: Repeating a course (C/D grade) to increase CGPA.

Grading Formula

GPA = Σ (Grade Points × Credit Hours) / Σ Credit Hours

NUML Grading Scale

The official grading system used by NUML:

Letter Grade Marks % Grade Points
A+ 90% + 4.0
A 80 - 89% 4.0
B+ 75 - 79% 3.5
B 70 - 74% 3.0
C+ 65 - 69% 2.5
C 60 - 64% 2.0
D 50 - 59% 1.5
F Below 50% 0.0

Understanding A+ vs A Grade

At NUML, both A+ (90%+) and A (80-89%) carry the same 4.0 GPA points. However, an A+ is a mark of distinction and can be crucial for Gold Medal considerations.

Note: NUML follows an Absolute Grading System. Your grade depends purely on your percentage marks, not on the class average.

Academic Rules: Deficiency & Promotion

⚠️ Deficient Student

You are declared "Deficient" if you fail a course or your SGPA/CGPA is below 2.00. You must improve this.

🚫 Relegation

Failing to improve your deficient status in probation periods may lead to "Relegation" (repeating the semester with juniors).

📅 Attendance

75% attendance is mandatory (80% recommended). Short attendance leads to an 'F' grade directly.

Calculation Example

Example of GPA calculation for an English Language student:

  • Linguistics (3 Credits): Grade B+ (3.5) → 3 × 3.5 = 10.5 points
  • Literature (3 Credits): Grade A (4.0) → 3 × 4.0 = 12.0 points
  • Research (3 Credits): Grade C+ (2.5) → 3 × 2.5 = 7.5 points

Total Credits: 9

Total Points: 30.0

SGPA = 30.0 / 9 = 3.33

Frequently Asked Questions

Grading & Policies

What is the difference between A+ and A?

Both A+ (90%+) and A (80-89%) have 4.00 Grade Points. However, A+ indicates exceptional performance and is recorded on the transcript, helping in distinctions like Gold Medals.

What is a 'Deficient Student'?

A student is marked "Deficient" if they fail a course, have short attendance, or their SGPA/CGPA falls below the required threshold (usually 2.00).

How does Relegation work?

If a student fails to clear deficiencies or probation within the allowed chances, they are "Relegated" to the next junior batch to repeat the semester.

Rules & Enrollment

Can I improve a 'C' grade?

Yes, students can improve 'C' or 'D' grades by taking them again. The better grade is considered for CGPA calculation.

What is the attendance policy?

NUML strictly requires 75% attendance in every course. Falling below this results in being barred from the final exam (F grade).

Does NUML have a Summer Semester?

Yes, a Summer Semester is offered for students to clear failed courses or improve low grades (D/C). It is shorter and intensive.

Are rules different for Main and Sub-Campuses?

No, NUML follows a Unified Academic Policy across all campuses (Islamabad, Lahore, Multan, etc.). The grading system is identical.

What is the passing criteria for MS/MPhil?

For graduate programs (MS/MPhil), the passing grade is generally 'C' (2.0), but a CGPA of 2.50 is usually required for degree award.

How are marks converted to GPA?

NUML uses an Absolute Scale. Your total marks out of 100 determine the letter grade (see table above), which then corresponds to Grade Points.

Where can I check official results?

Results are available on the NUML LMS (Learning Management System) and the departmental notice boards.
