Delhi University CBCS Grading Scale (10-Point)

DU uses an absolute grading system under CBCS. Your marks are mapped to letter grades and fixed grade points. The formula is: SGPA = Σ(Grade Point × Credits) / ΣCredits.

Letter GradeGrade PointsMark Range (%)Description
O1090 – 100%Outstanding
A+980 – 89%Excellent
A870 – 79%Very Good
B+760 – 69%Good
B655 – 59%Above Average
C550 – 54%Average
D440 – 49%Pass (Minimum)
F0Below 40%Fail (ER)
AB0Absent (ER)

⚠️ You must score 40% separately in both Theory and Internal/Practical components. Passing one component alone does not qualify as passing the paper.

Step-by-Step DU CGPA Calculation (Real CBCS Example)

Here is how a B.Com (Honours) Semester 1 student calculates SGPA under the DU CBCS system:

PaperCredits (C)GradePoints (GP)C × GP
Financial Accounting6A+954
Business Organisation6A848
Business Mathematics6B+742
AECC: English4O1040
SEC: Business Communication2A816
Total24200
SGPA = 200 ÷ 24 = 8.33  |  Est. Percentage = 8.33 × 9.5 = 79.1%

This student is in First Division (CGPA ≥ 6.0) and performing well above the First Class threshold. Enter your own grades into the calculator above to track all 6 semesters.

5 Common DU CGPA Calculation Mistakes

Wrong Percentage Multiplier

CBCS batches (pre-2023) use CGPA × 9.5. NEP 2020 batches (2023+) use CGPA × 10. Using the wrong multiplier can show a 0.5–5% difference. Always check your transcript footer.

Not Counting ER Credits

F/AB grades give 0 points but credits ARE still counted in the denominator. Students often skip failed papers when estimating CGPA, inflating their result significantly.

Using Wrong Credit Values

DU Honours core papers carry 6 credits, AECC/GE carry 4, and SEC carry 2. Entering incorrect credit values shifts SGPA by 0.2–0.5 points. Cross-check with your course structure.

Confusing Promotion with Pass

You can be promoted to the next year even with ER papers (if you passed 50%+ of papers). But you are not a degree holder until all ERs are cleared within the Span Period.

Delhi University Grading System (CBCS & NEP)

Delhi University follows a 10-point Choice Based Credit System (CBCS). Recently, with NEP 2020, some rules regarding promotion and percentage conversion have been updated.

Passing & Promotion

  • Passing Marks: 40% in Theory & Internal Assessment separately.
  • Promotion (NEP): You must pass 50% of the total papers in the academic year (Sem 1 & 2 combined) to move to the next year.
  • Combined Score: New rules often require 63% combined in first year for certain promotions (verify with college).

Percentage Formulas

Old Batch (Pre-2023): Percentage = CGPA × 9.5

New NEP Batch (2023+): Percentage = CGPA × 10

Note: Always check your official final transcript footer for the exact formula applicable to your batch.

DU Academic Rules (NEP & CBCS)

⚠️ ER (Essential Repeat)

If you get an 'F' or 'AB', you get an ER. You must re-appear for the exam in the next simplified semester (1st with 3rd, 2nd with 4th).

✅ Promotion Criteria

To move to the next year, you must pass 50% of the total papers (Theory + Practical) of the current academic year (Sem 1 + 2).

⏳ Span Period

You have a maximum of N+2 years (where N is course duration) to clear all ERs and complete your degree.

Frequently Asked Questions (Delhi University)

Grading & Results

What does 'ER' mean in my result?

ER stands for Essential Repeat. It means you have failed the paper (secured 'F' grade) or were absent ('AB'). You must reappear for this exam in the subsequent semester cycles to clear it.

How is First Division calculated?

A CGPA of 6.0 or higher is considered First Division. A CGPA between 5.0 and 6.0 is Second Division, and 4.0 to 5.0 is Third Division/Pass.

CGPA to Percentage: 9.5 or 10?

For most CBCS batches, the multiplier is 9.5. However, under the new NEP/UGCF 2022 framework, the multiplier is often 10. Always verify footnotes on your official transcript.

Rules & Promotion

Did I pass if I failed one subject?

You are Promoted if you pass 50% of the total papers in the year. However, you will have an 'ER' for the failed subject that you must clear later to get the degree.

What is the "Span Period"?

The Span Period is the maximum time allowed to complete your degree. It is typically Course Duration (N) + 2 Years. E.g., for a 3-year BA, max time is 5 years.

Can I apply for Revaluation?

Yes, you can apply for revaluation within 15 days of result declaration by paying the requisite fee. Note that marks can decrease, stay same, or increase.

Exams & Improvement

What are passing marks for Practical?

You must secure 40% marks separately in the Practical exam (including continuous evaluation) and 40% in the Theory exam to pass the paper.

How does Improvement Exam work?

You can give improvement exams for passed papers to increase your grade. If you score less in improvement, the original higher marks are typically retained (verify specific year notification).

Does DU have a specialized Honors grading?

No, limits for letter grades (O, A+, etc.) are the same for Honors and Programme courses under CBCS, but Honors courses often carry higher credit weightage (e.g., 6 credits vs 4).

What does 'NA' mean?

'NA' usually stands for Not Available. It might appear if Internal Assessment marks were not submitted by the college. Contact your admin immediately.

Study Abroad & CGPA Conversions

What is a good CGPA at Delhi University for placements?

Most corporate recruiters visiting DU colleges require a minimum of 6.0 CGPA (First Division). Prestigious firms and PSU jobs often expect 7.0+. For civil services and premium grad school (IIMs, ISB), aim for 8.0+ CGPA. An 8.0 CGPA at DU corresponds to roughly 76% under CBCS (×9.5).

How does DU CGPA convert to German grade?

Use the Bavarian Formula with Nmax = 10.0 and Nmin = 4.0 (DU passing grade D = 4 pts). Example: CGPA 8.0 gives German Grade = 1 + 3 × [(10−8)/(10−4)] = 2.0 (Gut/Good). Use our German Grade Calculator for instant results.

Is DU CGPA calculated differently for Honours vs Programme courses?

Grade points are the same for both. The key difference is credit weightage — Honours core papers carry 6 credits while GE/AECC carry 4 and SEC carry 2. A poor grade in a 6-credit Honours paper hurts your CGPA much more than a poor grade in a 2-credit SEC paper.
